Cold Weather Allergies? It Might Be Wind-Cold (A TCM Perspective)

Cold weather symptoms aren’t always allergies—sometimes the body is reacting to environmental stress

Feel Like You’re Allergic to Cold Weather?

You Just Might Be.

When “Allergy Symptoms” Show Up Without Allergens

When the weather turns cold do you feel like you’re suffering from allergies?  Sneezing, runny nose, post-nasal drip, itchy eyes/nose, cough; maybe even headaches or a stiff neck?  All the while wondering what exactly could be doing this to you when no major allergens are present?  Constantly taking allergy meds that are not helping your symptoms?

TCM Basics: Understanding the Six External Pathogens

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we can be “invaded” by the 6 Evils:  wind, cold, damp, dry, heat & summer heat.  Wind & cold typically come together as a “wind cold” event and the hallmark of this invasion is fever & chills.  In school, we learn this diagnosis as a cold or flu.

Illness or Allergies? My Personal Experience

As this winter kicked into gear, I began having all of the above symptoms but without any fever & chills (though I was feeling colder than normal).  It occurred to me that this diagnosis could also be something akin to allergies.  It took some time for me to realize what was happening as I always thought of a wind cold event as illness; and I had no signs of illness.  But when I reviewed the symptoms, they were all right in front of me, blinking like a neon sign.

What I Did Instead of Taking Allergy Medication

As wind is a part of this diagnosis, I turned the ever-present fan off in my bedroom.  More physical wind is of no help here.  My home tends to be drafty due to the many windows we have, so I made sure to dress much warmer than I typically would in the house.  There is also a representative herbal formula for this type of wind cold event, which I took.  This helped immeasurably.  One of my patients even commented on how my cough had improved just from the week prior.  I kept my torso and neck warm all of the time as this region is where we get ‘invaded’ by wind cold.  I stayed out of the cold at all costs and dressed appropriately when I went outside.

My progress through this cold winter...

Currently, the wind-cold event is over; so, I no longer take the full herbal formula.  But I have learned that I am just very sensitive to being physically cold.  In the winter, it’s cold from the outside and in the summer, it’s air conditioning.  And I do still have occasional sneezing and itchy nose symptoms, which get notably worse when I am out in the cold.  To mitigate this, I take a single ingredient of that formula that keeps these symptoms at bay.

Why Not Just Take an Allergy Pill?

Well, it’s not truly allergies, is it?  So why take medicine that isn’t necessary?  (And to be honest, I did take allergy meds for a while; they did nothing for my symptoms).  And taking a single herb vs. a bunch of unnecessary compounded medicines that have other side effects, to me, is a much better deal.

Could Your Symptoms Be Wind-Cold Instead of Allergies?

I’m not telling all allergy sufferers that they are treating themselves the wrong way.  And hey, you absolutely may have winter allergies that require allergy medicine.  I’m only trying to give a different perspective as someone who thought she had "year-round’ allergies and who was keeping the allergy medicine business happily in the black.

A Different Perspective on Seasonal Symptoms

If your symptoms don’t respond the way you expect, it may be worth looking at your body through a different lens. Sometimes the answer isn’t more medication—it’s better understanding.
