Hey! I’m Dr. Danielle Rose, your neighborhood women’s health acupuncturist, herbal medicine practitioner, and physical therapist in Annandale, VA.

Gut health is something I’m deeply passionate about—especially since my own husband struggled for years with IBS-D (Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea). Through acupuncture and herbal medicine, he’s made incredible progress and no longer needs to pop Imodium like it’s candy. My hope is that you’ll find the same success.
Understanding Diarrhea and IBS-D in Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Spleen plays a central role in digestion. It’s responsible for transforming food into energy (Qi) and transporting nutrients throughout the body. When your spleen is overworked or weakened, digestion slows—and loose stool or diarrhea often follow.

Modern life doesn’t help. Eating while working, skipping meals, and consuming cold, raw, or processed foods all stress the spleen and lead to poor digestion.

Common TCM Causes of Diarrhea and IBS-D

Dampness
Excess dampness can come from humid environments or diets high in dairy, sugar, and greasy foods. This “damp” slows digestion and can cause loose or urgent stools.
Qi Deficiency
When your body doesn’t produce enough Qi (energy), the gut lacks the strength to digest food efficiently. This can result in frequent loose stools, fatigue, or bloating after eating.
Cold in the Digestive System
Overconsumption of cold or raw foods—like smoothies or salads—slows the digestive process. Your gut becomes sluggish, leading to chronic diarrhea and discomfort.
Often, these patterns overlap, creating a combination of dampness, deficiency, and cold that keeps your digestion off balance.
How Acupuncture Helps with Diarrhea and IBS-D
Acupuncture works by rebalancing your digestive system and improving motility throughout the intestines. By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture helps regulate enzymes, calm inflammation, and strengthen the spleen and stomach function.

Patients often notice improvements within the first few sessions—less urgency, more formed stools, and a calmer, more predictable gut rhythm.

When paired with herbal medicine, results last longer and symptoms become easier to manage between visits.

What You Can Do at Home

Small Things That Make a Big Difference
-
Eat warm, cooked foods instead of cold/raw meals.
-
Avoid multitasking while eating (eat with friends, not with work!)
-
Try not to eat late at night or in the middle of the night.
These simple lifestyle shifts can make a big difference—and acupuncture helps your body integrate those changes more efficiently.
