When Sugar Feeds Stress: A TCM Perspective
As we wrap up Halloween and reflect on the extra sweets that may have made their way into our lives, I thought I’d write about stress and anxiety through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
A friend of mine recently told me that she realized one of her anxiety triggers was sugar (after eating her kid’s Halloween candy). She asked if that’s really a thing. And yes, it sure is! Let me explain why.
The Spleen, Sugar, and Your Energy
In TCM, we look at the body through the function of organ systems — and one of the most important is the Spleen. The Spleen is responsible for making qi (energy) and blood. It’s highly influenced by the foods we eat, especially sweet foods.
When we overindulge in sugar or processed sweets, the Spleen weakens, producing less qi and blood for the body. A weak Spleen = less nourishment and energy, which can lead to fatigue, worry, and a racing mind.
The Heart Connection
In TCM, the Heart and Spleen are deeply connected. The Spleen makes blood, and the Heart circulates it. When the Spleen weakens and blood is deficient, the Heart can’t function optimally — leading to anxiety, palpitations, restlessness, and insomnia.
So if you notice that your stress and anxiety spike after sugar or candy, your body may be signaling a Heart–Spleen imbalance.
Other TCM Causes of Stress & Anxiety
Of course, sugar isn’t the only culprit. In TCM, emotional strain, overthinking, lack of rest, and chronic stress can all disturb the Heart and Spleen. That’s why treatment is personalized — we look at your unique constitution and how stress manifests in your body.
How Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Can Help
Acupuncture helps calm the Heart, regulate qi, and strengthen the Spleen, creating a greater sense of grounding and calm. Herbal medicine supports this by nourishing blood, reducing worry, and easing tension from within.
Together, these treatments can help reduce the physiological patterns behind your stress and anxiety — not just mask the symptoms.
