If you’ve ever been curious about East Asian or Traditional Chinese herbal medicine, you’ve probably had a few questions:
What is it exactly? Why would I use it? And how is it different from the supplements I can buy at the store?
All fair questions—let’s break it down.
It Starts With a Diagnosis—Not Just Symptoms
When you visit an acupuncturist or East Asian herbalist, you’ll answer a lot of questions.
This isn’t random—it’s how we determine your diagnosis.
Just like your primary care provider might diagnose the flu or an ankle sprain, East Asian medicine also uses diagnostic patterns—but the language is different. You might hear terms like:
Wind-heat invasion
Qi stagnation
Blood deficiency
These aren’t just labels—they guide how we treat you.
The Same Symptom Doesn’t Mean the Same Cause
Here’s where things really differ from what most people are used to:
In East Asian medicine, the same symptom can come from very different underlying causes.
Take anxiety, for example. Three people may come in with similar symptoms, but their diagnoses could be completely different:
One may have blood deficiency
Another may have qi stagnation
Another may have excess heat
Same symptom—different root causes.
Which means…different treatments.
What Makes Herbal Medicine Different?
East Asian herbal medicine uses formulas, not just single herbs.
A formula typically includes 2 to 15+ herbs, carefully combined to address your specific diagnosis.
The goal is to treat the root imbalance, not just relieve symptoms.
When the underlying issue improves, the symptoms tend to follow.
How This Differs From Store-Bought Supplements
Many over-the-counter supplements focus on one herb for one symptom.
Sometimes you’ll find blends—but they’re still designed around symptoms, not individualized diagnoses.
This can work in some cases. But it can also miss the mark—or even make things worse.
For example: If your body has a “heat” pattern and you take herbs that are warming, you may unintentionally increase your symptoms.
Without addressing the root cause, you may find yourself repeating the same cycle without lasting relief.
Why Use Herbal Medicine?
There are a few key reasons:
1. It Treats the Root Cause
Instead of chasing symptoms, herbal medicine works to correct the underlying imbalance.
2. It Enhances Acupuncture
Acupuncture helps regulate the body over time. Herbal medicine can help speed up and deepen that process.
3. It’s Effective on Its Own
Not everyone loves needles—and that’s okay. Herbal medicine can be a powerful standalone treatment.
The Bottom Line
East Asian herbal medicine isn’t about finding the “right supplement.”
It’s about finding the right diagnosis—and the right formula for your body.
When treatment is tailored to you, the results tend to be more effective—and more sustainable.
