Backbending Safely in Your Yoga Practice
As I’ve moved through both my yoga and physical therapy journey, I’ve spent years asking questions about the body and how movement should actually feel.
What muscles should be working here? What should feel relaxed? Why does one pose feel supportive while another feels compressed or unstable?
Over time—and through both clinical experience and personal practice—I’ve developed a much deeper appreciation for how the body functions in yoga.
I’m also writing this as someone who personally struggles with backbending.
Backbends are often associated with flexibility, but in reality, safe and sustainable backbending depends just as much on strength, support, and control.
1. Hip Flexor Mobility Matters More Than Most People Think

My first recommendation for safer backbending is making sure the hip flexors are mobile and able to lengthen appropriately.
If the hip flexors are tight, backbending will almost always feel restricted or precarious.
When people hear “hip flexors,” they often think immediately of the psoas—and they are not wrong. The psoas is a major hip flexor. But there are several muscles involved in hip flexion, including muscles of the groin, lateral hip, and anterior thigh.
One particularly important muscle is the rectus femoris, part of the quadriceps group. Because it crosses both the hip and knee joints, it has a major influence on how backbends feel.
This means that stretching the front of the thigh—not just the front of the hip—can make a significant difference in comfort and mobility during backbending.
2. Your Abdominals Should Support Your Backbends

When I became a physical therapist, I often questioned whether the abdominal muscles should be active during backbends.
After all, the abs are associated with forward bending, while backbends move the spine in the opposite direction.
Over time, I came to the answer: yes, your abdominals absolutely should be working during backbends.
But how they work matters tremendously.
Many people are familiar with concentric abdominal activation, such as crunches or rotational exercises. That type of shortening contraction is not particularly helpful during backbending.
Instead, backbends require eccentric abdominal activation—a lengthened but engaged position where the abdominal muscles support and stabilize the spine while allowing extension to occur.
This type of core control helps distribute movement more evenly through the body and may reduce excessive compression in the lower back.
3. The Glute Debate in Yoga

Glute activation during backbending is one of the more controversial topics in yoga.
Some yoga traditions discourage engaging the glutes in backbends. Personally, I tend to look at anatomy and biomechanics first.
The glute muscles are the body’s primary hip extensors. Since backbending ideally involves extension through both the hips and the spine, it makes sense that the glutes would contribute to the movement.
In my opinion, appropriate glute activation is both helpful and protective.
That said, there is nuance here.
Excessive gripping or over-tensioning the glutes can make backbends feel compressed, restricted, or uncomfortable. Some people may actually benefit from stretching or releasing the glutes beforehand to create a freer feeling through the hips and spine.
The key is balanced activation—not excessive squeezing and not complete disengagement.
4. Forward Bending Helps Support Backbending

One of the most overlooked aspects of backbending is the importance of spinal flexion, or forward bending.
Ideally, we should be able to move comfortably in the opposite direction of the motion we are training.
Forward folds and spinal flexion help:
Lengthen tissues in the opposite direction
Improve overall spinal mobility
Reduce stiffness after deep extension work
Provide relief to areas that may feel compressed during backbending
Balanced movement variability is often one of the best ways to keep the spine feeling healthy over time.
Backbending Is About More Than Flexibility
Though many factors can influence how backbends feel, these are some of the most common issues I see clinically—and personally experience myself.
Safe backbending is not simply about “getting deeper” into a pose. It’s about creating enough mobility, strength, support, and body awareness for the movement to feel sustainable and controlled.
Because when backbends are supported well, they tend to feel expansive rather than strained.
